Hull City Council now has a super-slim version of its priorities: earning, learning, healthy and safe. The previous version was three couplets; obviously too difficult for people, maybe LibDem Cabinet members?... to remember. Apparently, the Democrat presidential contenders in the USA all have very pithy priorities and four is the preferred number.
I would like to tell you what mine would be as if I was Gordon. This is ofcourse very short-hand, although more than one word.
1. Income and wealth equality: Inequality is truly madly deeply corrosive. It kills people at the bottom and its killing our 'society'. Read Prof Richard Wilkinson. We are increasingly self and my family absorbed, comparing ourselves with the people with more. Whilst I'd love us to learn to live with less.... as a politician, I'd go for taxes, that's progressive income tax not regressive consumption taxes, and no concessions on inheritance tax.
2. Trade justice: There will be no peace without justice. We became a rich nation on the back of unfair trade. We need to take unilateral steps to do the right thing starting with a few signature goods with 'partner' nations and a very high profile public education campaign. It'd be important to make environment-saving connections somehow.
3. Housing availability: I'd ban property programmes. Oh, I can't do that. Well I'd tax second homes very hard indeed. I'd build Council houses mixed with private and I'd remove the right to buy.
4. Move all secondary age children to West Dunbartonshire: this is not Gordon's constituency and so isn't a rouse for keeping him in a seat in perpetuity. Its because, in this at least as deprived as anywhere else place, no child, that's NO CHILD leaves school without being able to read and write (unless they have particular learning difficulties). Hallelujah.
How they would work out locally we'll deal with some other time!
